LOCATION South Dakota is a midwestern state in the US. The state is bordered to the north by North Dakota, to the south by Nebraska, to the east by Iowa and Minnesota, and to the west by Wyoming and Montana. It is probably best known as the location of Mount Rushmore.

SOUTHEAST REGION

Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science is the region's newest and largest cultural and entertainment center.

Smith-Zimmermann Heritage Museum The museum's collections and exhibits focus on the ethnic history of the early settlements in Lake County and surrounding regions in eastern South Dakota from 1860 to the present.

NATIONAL PARKS

The Badlands National Park, located in southwestern South Dakota, is home to the black-footed ferret, the endangered land mammal in North America. The park, which covers 64,000 sq km, consists of 244,000 acres of buttes, pinnacles and spires blended with the mixed grass prairie. The Park contains the world's richest Oligocene epoch fossil beds, which are 23 to 35 million years old. "I was totally unprepared for that revelation called the Dakota Bad Lands," said Frank Lloyd Wright.

Jewel Cave National Monument is recognized as the third longest cave in the world. The cave is an important hibernaculum for several species of bats.

Mount Rushmore reflects patriotism; natural beauty and to some it represents a great work of art and still to others it presents a challenge for them to begin to share their own cultures.

Wind Cave National Park is one of the world's longest and most complex caves.
