The US has got some 64 designated national parks and Yellowstone
is the most popular among them. The national parks are home
to more than 60% of the nation's endangered species, and represent
some of the best remaining habitat for the country's wildlife
heritage. They are also seen as "touchstones of shared
history and culture."
President Ulysses S. Grant designated the Yellowstone National
Park in 1872. A cataclysmic volcanic eruption that occurred
about 640,000 years ago formed the Yellowstone National Park,
which has geothermal wonders like Old Faithful. This is the
first and oldest national park in the world and covers 3,470
square miles (8,980 km²).
The park, located in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, is famous
for its geysers, hot springs, and other geothermal features.
It is also home to grizzly bears, wolves, and free-ranging
herds of bison and elk. The Yellowstone Lake's Cutthroat Trout
is a trophy fish. Its core area, the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem,
is one of the largest intact temperate zone ecosystems on
Earth.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS: At this park you can view wildlife,
try backcountry hiking, camping, horseback riding or join
in a ranger-led nature walk. Geysers, hot springs, a grand
canyon, forests, wilderness, wildlife and even a large lake
can all be found inside the park.
LODGING for visitors are allowed at 11 locations within park
boundaries. There is a clear view of Old Faithful Geyser at
the park's Old Faithful Inn.
