Introduction
Mammoth Cave National Park is one of the popular national parks in U.S., located in central Kentucky. Encompasses portions of Mammoth Cave – the longest cave system in the world, Mammoth National Park spreads over an area of 52,835 acres and also preserves more than 367 miles of explored cave system. Established as a national park on 1st July, 1941, Mammoth Cave became a World Heritage Site on 27th October, 1981. On 26th September, 1990, this U.S. national park was designated an International Biosphere Reserve.
Visiting Mammoth Cave National Park
The biggest attraction of Mammoth Caves is surely the more than 367 miles of cave system.
Cave Tours: There are several cave tours available for the visitors. Tours may differ according to the season. You can go for the tours like Mammoth Passage Tour, Historic Tour, Frozen Niagara Tour, New Entrance Tour, Grand Avenue Tour, Snowball Tour, Star Chamber Tour, Violet City Lantern Tour, Wild Cave Tour, Mammoth Cave Discovery Tour and Introduction to Caving Tour.
Camping: Camping is another popular activity in Mammoth Cave National Park. There are a number of camping grounds available for the campers. You can go for Mammoth Cave Campgrounds, Houchins Ferry Campground, Maple Springs Group Campground etc. You can also go for Backcountry Camping.
Trails: Mammoth Park has plenty of trails for the hikers. Among the North Side Trails, there are Blair Spring Hollow Trail, Buffalo Trail, Collie Ridge Trail, First Creek Hollow Trail, Good Spring Loop Trail, McCoy Hollow Trail, Raymer Hollow Trail, Sal Hollow Trail, Turnhole Bend Trail, Wet Prong-McCoy Hollow Spur, Wet Prong Trail and White Oak Trail. Among South Side Trails, there are Cedar Sink Trail, Sand Cave Trail, Sloan’s Crossing Pond Trail and Turnhole Bend Nature Trail. In Visitor Center Area, you will find trails like Campground Trail, Dixon Cave Trail, Echo River Spring Trail, Echo River Trail, Green River Bluffs Trail, Mammoth Dome Sink Trail, River Styx Spring Trial and Heritage Trail.
How to Reach
Air: Those who are coming down by air, need to land at Louisville or Nashville.
Road: If you want to reach Mammoth National Park from north, take I-65 to exit 53. If you are coming down from south, take I-65 to Exit 48.
