Haleakala National Park

Haleakala National Park is an U.S. national park that besides being a wilderness area, also showcases the ancient and modern Hawaiian culture. Not only that, it also plays major role in protecting the bond that the land and its people share with each other. Located on Maui Island in the state of Hawaii, Haleakala National Park is the perfect place to spend your holiday amidst the sub-tropical rain forest and stark volcanic landscapes, spread over 30,183 acres of area.

Established in July 1, 1961, Haleakala National Park became quite popular among the tourists who love wilderness, adventure and natural beauty. The park features Haleakala Volcano, which is one of the greatest attractions of Haleakala National Park. There are two distinct sections of this national park of U.S. viz. the summit area and the coastal Kipahulu area. In 1980, Haleakala National Park was designated an International Biosphere Reserve.

Visiting Haleakala National Park Summit Area:

It is a wonderful area that includes the summit of the volcano – Haleakala Crater. And it is truly a wonderful journey to the summit where only tranquility exists. Haleakala Crater is 11.25 km in length, 3.2 km in width and 800 meters in depth. Various volcanic features can be found in the interior of the crater including cinder cones. The Halemau’u Trail and Sliding Sands Trail are the two trails that lead into the crater. Hikers can even stay there in one of the three cabins. This place also offers some of the best opportunities in the world to watch the vast blue sky during the night. It is quite popular among the amateur astronomers. You can also hire binoculars and telescopes here.

Kipahulu Area:

This is the place of lush green environment. Take a winding coastal road from the summit area to reach in this part of Haleakala National Park. Located in the lower part of Kipahulu Valley, this area has more than 2 dozens of pools, where you can find freshwater fishes. You can even swim in the pools.

Wilderness Area:

This is another area where you can explore Haleakala National Park to its fullest. You can go for hiking, camping and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Haleakala National Park has over 30 miles of hiking trails. Watch various native forest birds and endemic plants.

Opening Hours

Haleakala National Park remains open throughout the year, round the clock, unless bad weather calls for sudden shut down.

Park Headquarters Visitor Center: 6.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Haleakala Visitor Center: 5.15 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Kipahulu Visitor Center: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
How to Reach

Air: The nearest airport is located in Kahului in central Maui.

Road: To reach the Summit Area, take Route 37 to 377 to 378 from Kahului. To reach the Kipahulu Area, take Rout 36 to 360 to 31.
