Grand Teton National Park– an Introduction

The Grand Teton National Park is situated at the center of the Great Yellowstone Ecosystem. The Yellowstone National Parks and the Grand Teton National Park are connected by the Rockfeller Parkway. The Grand Teton National Park of Wyoming is located in the Rocky Mountains lying in Northwest Wyoming. The exact location of this USA national park is at a position lying to the south of Yellowstone National Park and north of the Jackson Town. The Grand Teton National Park in U.S is marked with stunning vistas of the mountains around, the sparkling alpine lakes and ample wildlife. This U.S national park The Park is named after the 4,197 meters tall Grand Teton, which is the tallest mountain in the Teton Range.

Visiting Grand Teton National Park

The Grand Teton National park is a hiker’s paradise. The best time to visit this exquisite location during the months of July and August. The place remains sunny and warm during this time and the snow melts in the high country. If you are on a short vacation in the park then take a drive through the Teton Park Road from Moose Junction and reach the Jenny Lake. This spot offers picturesque vistas of the Tetons and enables you to take short walks or long hikes. One can also go farther north to Signal Mountain and Jackson Lake. For long holidays, go for a floating experience in the Snake River. Hiking, canoeing, climbing, or attending a ranger-guided activities are also great treats to make the trip fun-filled.

Camping: The Flagg Ranch, Lizard Creek, Colter Bay, Signal Mountain, Jenny Lake and Gros Ventre are some of the prominent campgrounds available in the Grand Teton National Park. All of them are more or less well developed and offers adequate facilities and services.

Guided Tours: There are several forms of guided tours of the Grand Teton National Park available. An array of activities is offered by the Park rangers and they include hiking, slide shows, children’s activities and wildlife watch. These activities are mainly indulged during the summer season and during the fall one can very well go for elk watch trip and during the spring, watching the sage grouse strut is a great option. The rangers also offer guided snowshoe hiking tours from the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center from December through March.

Opening Hours

Jenny Lake Ranger Station:

Open from `May 16 to late September from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Remains closed during winter. Colter Bay Visitor Center & Indian Arts Museum:

Open from May 9 to May 3, from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. From June 1 to September, from 7: 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m and during September 8 to October 12 from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The center remains closed from October 12, 2009.

Flagg Ranch Information Station:

Open from June 1 to Sept, from, 7: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Closes for the season on September 7.

Jenny Lake Visitor Center:

Open from May 15 to May 31from, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During June 1 to September 7, remains open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. During September 8 to September 27, remains open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closes for the season on September 27

Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center: Open throughout the year but the timings are different. From Nov. 1to Mar. 31 open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. From April 1 to May 31, the center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During June 1 to September 7, the timing is from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. From September 8 to October 31, it is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and during November 1 to December 31 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Remain closed for Christmas on December 25.

Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve Center:

Open from May 24 to September 7 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and during September 8 to September 27 from, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The center closes for the season September 28, 2009, though the Preserve grounds are open throughout the year.

How to Reach Air: The nearest airport to the Grand Teton National Park is the Jackson Hole Airport which is located within the boundary of the park. American, Continental, Delta, Frontier, Northwest, Sky west, and United are the major carriers serving the airport.

Road: The U.S. Highways 89, 191 and 287 are the common roads into the park from the northern side and all of them take their route via the Yellowstone National Park. The route however is closed down during winter through the months of November to April on account of snow. If you are approaching from the south then U.S. Highways 26, 89 and 191 can be taken from Jackson. The Grassy Lake Road, a gravel road connects Ashton, Idaho, to U.S. 89 and end near the north end of the park. It is the path to be taken if you are coming from the west. This route also gets closed during winter.
