Everglades National Park – an Introduction

It is the largest subtropical wilderness in USA. Everglades National Park is full of characters and accolades. Besides being a subtropical wilderness, Everglades National Park has also been declared an International Biosphere Reserve, a Wetland of International Importance as well as a World Heritage Site at the same time. Unlike other national parks in USA, Everglades National Park was conceived to protect a fragile ecosystem. This USA national park is the home to 36 endangered species of wild creatures including Florida panther, American crocodile and West Indian manatee. Everglades National Park is also the breeding ground for tropical wading birds.

Visiting Everglades National Park

There are plenty to explore at Everglades National Park. This national park of U.S. is the home to over 350 species of birds, 40 species of mammals, 50 species of reptiles and 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish. Besides visiting those, you have plenty more to do in Everglades National Park. However, most of the facilities remain available for the visitors during the busy dry season in winter months.

Trails: Everglades National Park has a few trails that are quite popular among the adventure tourists. You can explore the trails like Pine Island Trails, Shark Valley Trails, Flamingo Trails and Gulf Coast Trails.

Guided Tours: There are a few guided tours available in Everglades National Park. Shark Valley Tram Tours will take you along the 15 mile loop into the “River of Grass”. Narrated Boat Tours will take you to the Gulf Coast and Flamingo areas. You can also go for Flamingo Marina as well.

Boating, fishing and camping are some of the other popular activities in Everglades National Park.

Opening Hours

Everglades National Park remains open throughout the year.

Main Park Entrance: Remains open round the clock.

Chekika: Remains open from December 1 through April 30.

Shark Valley: Remain open daily from 8.30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Gulf Coast: Remains open round the clock.
