Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum – an Introduction
Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum is the home to world’s largest collection of aircraft and spacecraft. Also an important center for the research into science, technology and history of aviation and spaceflight, and also the planetary science, geophysics and terrestrial geology, Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum showcases almost all its space and aircrafts in their original forms. Located in Washington, D.C., this U.S. national park is also the most popular of all the Smithsonian museums.
Visiting Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum
There are two display facilities in Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum, viz. the National Mall Building and the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum has a collection of over 30,000 aviation-related as well as around 9,000 space-related artifacts. You can see the unique pieces like original Wright 1903 Flyer, the Apollo 11 command module, the Spirit of St. Louis, and the lunar rock sample in the National Mall building. Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center has some wonderful samples like Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay, Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird and Space Shuttle Enterprise etc.
Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum has a total number of 22 exhibition galleries. You will spend some exciting times in visiting Lockheed Martin Imax Theater, the Albert Einstein Planetarium, How Things Fly, Early Flight, Milestones of Flight, The Wright Brothers & The Invention of the Aerial Age, Space Race, Apollo to the Moon, Looking at Earth, Exploring the Planets, Explore the Universe and many more.
In Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, you will visit the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar, the Donald D. Engen Observation Tower, Airbus Imax Theater, Wall of Honor and many more.
