Metropolitan Museum of Art – an Introduction

Metropolitan Museum of Art, popularly known as “The Met”, is a renowned museum in the New York City. The home to more than two million art works, Metropolitan Museum of Art is simply an art lover’s paradise. The main building of this U.S. museum, known more popularly as “the Met” is one of the largest art galleries in the world. Metropolitan Museum of Art also has a second location, much smaller in size, in Upper Manhattan, at “The Cloisters”, which showcases a range of medieval arts.

Founded in 1870 by a group of U.S. citizens, Metropolitan Museum of Art currently has almost quarter mile long building with more than 2 million square feet area. The permanent collections of the museum include the arts from classical antiquity and Ancient Egypt, an exhaustive collection of modern and American art, and paintings and sculptures of several European masters. The extensive collection of Asian, African, Byzantine, Oceanic and Islamic art are truly enviable. One would also find a commendable collection of costumes and accessories, encyclopedic collections of musical instruments, and antique weapons from all parts of the world in this museum of U.S.

Curatorial Departments: The curatorial departments of the Metropolitan Museum of Art include American Decorative Arts, American Paintings and Sculpture, Ancient Near Eastern Art, Arms and Armor, Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, Asian Art, The Cloisters, The Costume Institute, Drawing and Prints, Egyptian Art, European Paintings, European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, Greek and Roman Art, Islamic Art, The Robert Lehman Collection, The Libraries, Medieval Art, Modern Art, Musical Instruments, Photographs, Antonio Ratti Textile Center, and Provenance Research Project.

Besides the various departments and its collections, Metropolitan Museum of Art also regularly organizes various exhibitions and events for the visitors.

The Cloisters:

The Cloisters is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, dedicated to the art and architecture of medieval Europe with more than 5,000 objects. Some of the most notable items can be named as the Belles Heures of Jean de France, Duc de Berry by Limbourg Brothers, Cloisters Cross – the Romanesque altar cross etc.
