De Young Museum – an Introduction

M. H. de Young Museum, popularly known as De Young Museum, is a popular fine arts museum in U.S. Located in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, and named after the early city newspaperman M. H. de Young, De Young Museum showcases various art works including the American decorative pieces, textiles as well as paintings from the Rockefeller Collection of American Art. De Young Museum is also known for the Bouquets to Art – a floral exhibition organized every year. Not only that, this U.S. museum also houses a number of other African and Oceanic collections including the famous ‘Art of the Americas’ collection.

Visiting De Young Museum

De Young Museum has got an exhaustive collection including the priceless collection of murals from Teotihuacán. It has one of the finest collections of American paintings in U.S. Besides these, one can also find other collections including American Sculpture & Decorative Art, African Art, Oceanic Art, The Jolika Collection of New Guinea Art, Art of the Americas, Textiles, The Anderson Graphic Arts Collection, The Dorothy and George Saxe Collection of Contemporary Craft, and The Lewis K. and Elizabeth M. Land Collection etc.

Besides its wide collections, there are also a number of exhibitions that are regularly organized at De Young Museum. Some of the current exhibitions that the visitors can attend include Art and Power in the Central African Savana, Toward Abstraction: Photographs and Photograms, and Amish Abstractions: Quilts from the Collection of Faith and Stephen Brow. However, it is always better to check which exhibitions are currently going on before you go to visit De Young Museum.

Hours of Operation

Permanent Collections:

Tuesday through Sunday: 9.30 a.m. to 5.15 p.m.

Friday: 9.30 a.m. to 8.45 p.m. (from mid-January through November)

Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs Exhibition:

Monday through Sunday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

De Young Museum closes at 3.30 p.m. on July 4, December 24 and 31.

Closed: January 1, July 13, August 3, August 31, Thanksgiving Day and December 25.
