American Museum of Natural History – an Introduction

It is undoubtedly one of the largest and most popular museums in the world. It is American Museum of Natural History – one of the most visited museums in U.S. Located in a park-like ground on the Upper West Side, Manhattan in New York, American Museum of Natural History has got 46 permanent exhibition halls, research laboratories and the famous library in its 25 interconnected buildings. Established in 1869, American Museum of Natural History is the home to more than 32 million specimens. However, a small portion of its collections are in display at a given time for the visitors. This U.S. museum also has over 200 scientific staff. It also sponsors several field expeditions every year.



Visiting American Museum of Natural History

American Museum of Natural History is one of the largest museums in the world, and with no surprise, you have got plenty to visit here. Its 46 permanent exhibition halls, the research libraries, or the most famous library – American Museum of Natural History has got a lot in store for you.

As you start visiting American Museum of Natural History, you will come to see some of the most notable collections ranging from habitat dioramas of African, North American and Asian mammals, the “Star of India” – world’s largest star sapphire, a gigantic 31 ton Cape York meteorite, a 62 ft Haida carved and painted war canoe, a full size Blue Whale model suspended in the Milstein Family Hall of Ocean Life and many more.

American Museum of Natural History is also the home to an exhaustive collection of Asian and Pacific Peoples, collection of American Indian, collection of general Native American, Man in Africa, and the collections from Central America and Mexico as well. The Hayden Planetarium is another attraction connected to this museum. It is currently a part of the Rose Center for Earth and Space. You should also visit the Heilbrun Cosmic Pathway – one of the popular exhibits in the Rose Center.

While visiting American Museum of Natural History, try to make a point to visit the halls like the Bernard and Anne Spitzer Hall of Human Origins, the Harry Frank Guggenheim Hall of Minerals, the Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites etc.

The Library:

The American Museum of Natural History houses a famous library that has got one of the greatest natural history collections in the world. Currently, the library contains more than 450,000 volumes of monographs, microforms, pamphlets, serials, reprints as well as original illustrations, films, photographs, fine art, manuscripts, rare book collections and memorabilia etc.
